Wireless at last
What a few days it's been! Living in rural Ireland has its blessings, but being behind the technology curve with internet connectivity has been a constant frustration. The phone company delivered ISDN capability to my village just when DSL was being introduced everywhere else!
For the last three years, I've been using a Satelite connection to the internet. There are afew local companies doing it in Ireland. Don't be fooled by the promised connection speeds. It's way fast if you download but for general browsing, it just sucks. Browsing response time is no better than ISDN and boy is it expensive. The cost per month including equipment rental was EUR169 per month.... ouch!! I shudder to think how much I spent on that crock over the last three years.
Anyway my new years resolution this year was to dump satelite and get me a proper wireless link going. I have line of sight with Forth mountain in Co. Wexford where there is a forest of base stations and antenae. So this weekend after eight months of trying I finally got a solid connection going the twenty mile round trip from the roof of my house to the mountain and back.
I can't tell you how good that feels. :-)
